Puerto Maldonado - Sandoval Lake Lodge
Transfer from Puerto Maldonado airport to the Madre de Dios River port, then travel 25 minutes by motor canoe to the trailhead for Sandoval Lake Lodge. From there, continue by a 2-mile walk or rickshaw ride through secondary forest to a narrow canal, where we board canoes and paddle 220 yards through flooded Mauritia palm forest to the lake. A catamaran then takes us across the lake to the lodge.
Sandoval Lake
After lunch and a short rest, we explore the lake’s west end, drifting through palm forest as Red-Bellied Macaws return for the evening. After dinner, we head out by canoe to search for Black Caimans and, on clear nights, admire the star-filled sky from the lake. (L, D)
Giant Otters and Wildlife
We rise before dawn for sunrise on the lake and a chance to see the resident Giant Otter family, most active in the early morning. This outing also offers excellent views and photo opportunities for fish-eating birds, including the prehistoric-looking Hoatzin.
Primary Forest Exploration
After a late breakfast, we walk through the cool primary forest near the lake to see towering Brazil nut trees and learn how local hosts collect and process this valuable product.
Eastern Side of the Lake
After lunch and time to rest, we explore the eastern side of the lake by catamaran, where we may spot monkeys such as the Brown Capuchin. After dinner, there is one last chance to look for Black Caimans or take a short night walk through the forest. (B, L, D)
Sandoval Lake - Puerto Maldonado
After dawn and breakfast, we take a final short paddle around the west end of the lake for one last chance to see Giant Otters before returning to Puerto Maldonado for the flight to Cusco or Lima. (B)
