Cusco - Cachora - Playa Rosalina
Pick up at 04:30 for the 4-hour drive to Cachora (3,100 m). While we have breakfast, the crew prepares the horses. Today we hike 22 km, first descending, then climbing gently past Abra Capuliyoc, with superb views of the Apurímac Canyon. The trail continues near Coca Masana before descending to Playa Rosalina on the banks of the Apurímac River, a main tributary of the Amazon. Campsite at 1,550 m, or occasionally Chiquisca (1,900 m). (L, D)
Playa Rosalina - Choquequirao
After an early breakfast, we cross the bridge and climb the opposite mountainside, first through Opuntia plantations and then into cloud forest. Though steep, the trail offers excellent views. We reach camp around 15:00, then begin exploring the nearby ruins. The canyon views are spectacular, and with luck we may see Andean condors overhead. Campsite at Choquequirao, 3,033 m. (B, L, D)
Choquequirao
After breakfast, we have more time to explore the ruins, including the stone llama terraces if conditions allow.
Choquequirao - Playa Rosalina
We then descend toward Santa Rosa for lunch and continue to Playa Rosalina. If river conditions are suitable, there may be time for a refreshing swim in the Apurímac River. Alternatively, we may camp a little farther on in Chiquisca. (B, L, D)
Playa Rosalina - Cachora - Cusco
After an early breakfast, we climb back through Chiquisca to Cachora, again enjoying views of the canyon. In Cachora we have lunch, then return by bus to Cusco, arriving in the afternoon for transfer to the hotel. (B)
