Puerto Maldonado - Manu Wildlife Center
After arriving in Puerto Maldonado, we travel by van to Santa Rosa, cross the Inambari River by boat to Puerto Carlos, continue by car to Boca Colorado, and then take a motorized boat upstream on the Madre de Dios River to Manu Wildlife Center, with box lunch en route.
Forest Trails
Later, we explore the forest trails around the lodge, where we may see monkeys such as Spider Monkey and Emperor Tamarin. After dinner, we take a night walk in search of nocturnal birds and other rainforest wildlife. (Box Lunch, D)
Macaw Clay Lick Project
After breakfast, we take a short boat ride and walk to the Macaw Lick project, where scarlet macaws and other birds gather on the clay banks in a spectacular display. We then continue along the lodge trails before returning for lunch.
Canopy Tower & Tapir Clay Lick
In the late afternoon, we visit the 34 m/112 ft Canopy Tower to watch rainforest activity at dusk, then continue to the famous Tapir Clay Lick for a chance to observe these elusive animals from a raised platform. (B, L, D)
Tapir Clay Lick
This clay lick, the most active known in the Amazon, attracts 8 to 12 tapirs that feed on mineral-rich clay to help neutralize toxins in their plant-based diet. From a quiet raised platform 5 m/17 ft above the forest floor, equipped for comfortable waiting, we may observe these shy animals at close range, and flash photography is allowed. (B, L, D)
Blanco Oxbow Lake
We set out early to Blanco Oxbow Lake, where a catamaran ride may reveal Giant Otters, monkeys, jacanas, sun grebes, anhingas, ospreys, hoatzins, woodpeckers, tanagers, macaws, toucans, and parakeets.
Wildlife Trails
After lunch at the lodge, there is time for more trail exploration in search of wildlife.
Night Wildlife Excursion
In the late afternoon and evening, we may search for caimans and other nocturnal species by boat, depending on river conditions. (B, L, D)
Manu Wildlife Center - Puerto Maldonado
We leave early by boat for Colorado Village, with breakfast served en route and another chance to observe wildlife along the river. After crossing through Colorado, Puerto Carlos, and Santa Rosa, we continue by road to Puerto Maldonado airport for the flight to Cusco or Lima. (B)
